Is my doctor's prescription enough?
In short
Sometimes, but a prescription alone is the thinnest version of the file. It shows the medication was lawfully dispensed to you where you live; it does not carry legal force across a border, and it usually lacks fields a reviewing official needs. Carry it, and treat it as one item among several rather than the whole answer.
What a prescription proves, and what it does not
A prescription is an instruction to a pharmacy, written under one country's rules. It establishes that a clinician authorised this medication for you and that a pharmacy dispensed it lawfully.
It does not establish that you may bring the substance into another country, because that is a decision under that country's law, and your prescription is not an instrument of that law.
What prescriptions typically lack
Held against what reviewing officials tend to look for, an ordinary prescription is missing several things: the prescriber's professional registration number, a stated diagnosis, the active substance name where the brand is used, the travel dates, the total quantity for the journey, and often a legible issue date. It is also frequently in a language the reader does not have, and in an abbreviated clinical shorthand.
None of that makes it useless. It makes it incomplete.
The stronger combination
In practice the file that works is four items together: the current prescription; a doctor's travel letter in English containing the fields the route requires — see the doctor's travel letter; the medication in original packaging with the pharmacy label attached; and, where the route calls for it, an authorisation obtained in advance.
Each answers a different question. Together they leave very little to interpretation, which is the whole objective.
The honest limit
