Do I need a permit for my medication?
In short
It depends on the active substance and on where you are going — not on whether you hold a prescription. Some substances need nothing beyond your prescription and original packaging, some need documentation, and some need an authorisation obtained in advance. It is a lookup against a verified record, and the check is free.
What actually decides it
Three inputs, in this order.
The active substance. Not the brand name — the international name printed in smaller type on the box. Control attaches to the substance, and the same molecule is sold under different brand names in different markets.
The destination. Classification is national. There is a set of international treaties underneath most drug laws, which is why the systems resemble each other, but each country builds its own rules on top. See what makes a medication controlled.
Quantity and trip length. Even where a substance is permitted, there is usually a ceiling, and it is often tied to how long you are away.
Your prescription is not one of the three. It authorises you to hold the medication under the law that issued it; it does not carry legal force across a border.
The three possible outcomes
Nothing required. Your prescription, a doctor's letter and the original packaging are enough. Most travellers with most medications land here.
Documentation required. No application, but specific documents in a specific form — typically a letter containing fields your doctor would not include unprompted.
Advance authorisation required. A formal application, with a form, a recipient and a lead time. This is the case where being late genuinely matters, because there is generally no counter at the airport that issues one on arrival.
