When there is no permit route

"There is no route" is one of the answers we give, and it is the one people are least prepared for. It is also three completely different answers wearing the same words, and the difference decides what you do next.

Reason one: nothing is required

The most common version, and the most cheerful. Some substances simply are not controlled at a given destination, or fall below whatever threshold engages the rules there. There is no permit route because there is nothing to permit.

In this case you are not stuck — you are already finished. You travel with your prescription, your doctor's letter and your medication in original packaging, which is good practice regardless, and nothing further is needed.

Reason two: no mechanism exists

Sometimes a substance is controlled and there is nevertheless no application to make. No form, no office, no procedure for a traveller to obtain advance permission. Silence, rather than a refusal.

This is the most uncomfortable of the three, because there is nothing to do that produces a piece of paper. What remains is documentation: making sure that what you carry — prescription, letter, packaging, quantities that reconcile — is as complete and as legible as it can be, so that anyone examining it can resolve the question quickly.

It is worth being direct about what this means. Without an advance authorisation, the outcome at the border is a judgement made by a person in that moment. Good documentation improves those odds considerably. It does not replace a permit, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Reason three: it is prohibited

Sometimes the source says no. Not "no procedure" but an explicit prohibition, in writing, that we can quote.

This is the answer nobody wants and the one we deliver most plainly, because here the consequences are not paperwork. When we say this, we say it with the quotation and the date it was checked, so you can see the sentence for yourself.

What follows is a conversation about alternatives rather than about applications: whether a different formulation or substance is available and appropriate — a question for your doctor and only your doctor; whether the supply can be handled at the destination; whether the itinerary can change; or whether, in the end, the trip should not happen in this form. That last option is a real one, and we would rather you reach it at your kitchen table than at a border.

The fourth possibility: we do not know

Distinct from all three, and stated separately. Sometimes there is no verified record and we cannot responsibly claim there is or is not a route.

Why the negative answer is free

Every service that charges for answers has an incentive to find work. We neutralise it in the simplest way available: the answer that stops you is never billed.

If we tell you there is nothing to do, you have paid nothing. If we tell you the destination prohibits your medication, you have paid nothing. The only thing you can pay for is work we actually perform on a route we actually believe exists. That structure is the reason the positive answer is worth anything.

If we find it mid-way

Occasionally a route turns out to be blocked after work has begun. If we discover that during the engagement, your payment is refunded — the one refund case we recognise, set out in pricing and in the terms.

What not to do with a "no"

Do not go looking for a more agreeable answer. There is a great deal of confident, outdated and simply invented material on this subject, and the version that tells you what you want to hear is the easiest to find. If you do find something that contradicts us, bring it — if it is a primary source we have missed, we will read it, correct our record, and say so publicly.

And do not improvise at the border. An unauthorised substance carried on the strength of a forum post is the situation this entire service exists to keep people out of.
