Flying to Japan with ADHD medication

Japan is the destination where ADHD medication causes the most surprises. The reason is simple and unforgiving: Japan does not look at "ADHD medication" as one category. It looks at the active ingredient — and the answer for one ingredient can be the opposite of the answer for its close cousin.

Same condition, three different answers

Adderall. The Japanese authority is explicit: amphetamine, the active ingredient of Adderall, cannot be imported into Japan, even for treatment purposes מקור: gov_page, 16.8.2026. No form or letter changes that. If this is your medication, the time to find out is weeks before the trip, with your doctor — not at Narita.

Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine). A close relative on paper, and a different answer in practice:

Why travellers get caught out

Because the advice they find is generic. "Bring your prescription and a doctor’s letter" is sensible almost everywhere — and it misses the point in Japan, where the question is first which substance, and only then which paperwork. Travellers who assume their brand is "the same kind of thing" as a friend’s are the ones who discover the difference at the counter.
